When Alan was six years old, he and his family immigrated to Canada, where his love of nature was nurtured by the 65th Toronto (High Park) Scout Troop. He has continued hiking, canoeing, and camping throughout his life. The topographic maps used during his explorations have now inspired his artwork.

Alan has been painting and drawing since childhood and graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design University in 1984. He currently lives in St Marys, Ontario, where he maintains STUDIO 234. His work has been featured in many Canadian galleries, juried shows and hangs in private collections around the world
